JOHN KAATZ (CSL Principal)
Mr. Kaatz’s experience includes in-depth analyses for over 500 convention, hospitality, destination planning and public assembly facility projects. The results of these studies have been have been used to assist public and private sector entities in assessing project market and financial feasibility, developing viable building program solutions, improving marketing and operational performance, preparing comprehensive destination development plans, and in developing policies and procedures to maximize financial and economic impact performance. Prior to joining CSL, John was the Director of Coopers & Lybrand’s Convention and Visitor Industry Consulting Group based in Dallas. John has been asked to speak at various industry forums and seminars related to the convention, visitor and sports industries. He has also testified before local and state-wide public bodies related to the financial and economic implications of public sector investment in the convention and visitor industry. John holds a B.S. in Economics from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He has been quoted in numerous national and local publications on topics related to the public assembly industry. John is a member of the International Association of Venue Managers and Destination Marketing Association International.
JOHN SHREVE (Populous Senior Principal)
John Shreve is a Senior Principal at Populous who has been a practitioner of architecture, planning and urban design for more than 25 years, working with a wide range of clients across the globe. His career began with a community development corporation specializing in affordable housing and healthcare, and later expanded into more complex retail and mixed-use projects as a lead designer. During his career, John has led numerous award-winning designs for multiple public venues and mixed-use projects, with special attention on the impact these anchor buildings have on a city’s urban fabric and redevelopment efforts. His passion for urban planning expands to his ongoing teaching and research at the University of Kansas, where he is completing his PhD. John is the co-founder and Associate Director of KU’s New Cities Research Studio, a think tank in its fourth year of interdisciplinary research on aging and the built environment. New Cities has attracted growing attention and relevance as a creative forum that integrates innovative academic work with emerging trends in private industry. John is a trusted advisor to cities and universities, overseeing urban planning efforts for the firm and guiding the development of urban districts, campuses, and entertainment destinations to create memorable public spaces that highlight a community’s unique assets.
JOEL FELDMAN (CSL Project Manager)
Joel Feldman has been with CSL’s convention and visitor industry services practice since 2006. Joel’s experience as Project Manager or Lead Analyst through nearly 100 studies has included in-depth analysis for a wide variety of visitor-generating facilities including convention centers, conference centers, hotels, multipurpose event centers, arenas, performing arts centers, fairgrounds/exposition complexes, indoor and outdoor amateur sports complexes and other such facilities. The result of Mr. Feldman’s work has included detailed reports on strategic business planning, operational and governance recommendations, facility and organizational funding recommendations, economic impact analyses and other cost/benefit analyses. Mr. Feldman is directly responsible for conducting the outreach to current, past and potential new event facility user groups. The insight gained through this exhaustive process, combined with the direct market research conducted, provides the necessary perspective for developing market supportable facility space programs, financial operating models and economic and fiscal impact projections. Additionally, he has conducted numerous benchmarking and best practices analyses for managing and/or governing these event facilities and the organizations responsible for marketing them and the destination.
TYLER OTHEN (CSL Analyst)
Tyler Othen’s experience as an Analyst has included planning during the developmental stages of convention center construction, expansion and renovation, performing various market demand and comparable facility analyses, as well as analyses related to the operation of public assembly facilities. Mr. Othen’s background also includes performing market viability analyses, financial operating analyses, economic and fiscal impact analyses, strategic destination development plans, and other similar research and analysis efforts.
